Review: Sarod and Tabla Concert

By Uday Kamath (04/22/2023)

Yesterday’s captivating Hindustani classical concert transported the audience into sublime musical ecstasy. The extraordinary talents of Shri Abhisek Lahiri, a maestro of the sarod, and Shri Subrata Bhattacharya, a virtuoso tabla player, graced the stage. Together, they embarked on a mesmerizing duet that showcased their profound artistry and deep understanding of the Hindustani classical tradition.

The concert commenced with the enchanting raga Patdeep, an evening melody that evokes a sense of introspection and contemplation. As the first notes resonated from the sarod, Lahiri’s nimble fingers breathed life into each delicate stroke, weaving intricate melodic patterns that effortlessly blended with the tabla’s rhythmic foundation, skillfully provided by Bhattacharya. The duo’s synergy was palpable as they explored the raga’s nuances, interlacing moments of serenity with bursts of zeal, captivating the hearts of all in attendance.

Following the spellbinding rendition of Patdeep, Lahiri and Bhattacharya seamlessly transitioned into the raga Purvi. With its profound emotional impact and tonal richness, Purvi allowed Lahiri to showcase his mastery of the sarod, producing resonant and soul-stirring notes. Bhattacharya’s tabla, ever responsive to the sarod’s melodic journey, punctuated the performance with precision and flair, effortlessly synchronizing with Lahiri’s intricate improvisations. The duo’s seamless interplay created an immersive experience, immersing the listeners in the profound emotions conveyed by the raga.

To conclude their awe-inspiring performance, Lahiri and Bhattacharya delved into the raga Manjh Khamaj, a melody known for its inherent sweetness and playful character. This raga provided a delightful contrast to the previous renditions, infusing the atmosphere with joy and liveliness. Lahiri’s sarod danced with exuberance, its agile notes cascading like a gentle stream, while Bhattacharya’s tabla added a rhythmic pulse that invigorated the composition.

Throughout the concert, Lahiri and Bhattacharya displayed exceptional speed, technical precision, and clarity in their performance. Their intricate improvisations showcased their deep musical knowledge and ability to infuse each note with emotion and intensity. The audience remained captivated, their hearts resonating with every flourish, every delicate taan, and every thunderous tabla stroke. Lahiri and Bhattacharya’s artistry transcended the boundaries of mere entertainment, creating an immersive experience that touched the souls of all who witnessed their sublime performance.

As the final notes of their last raga reverberated through the concert hall, the audience rose in a thunderous ovation, their applause a testament to the extraordinary talent and profound musicianship of Shri Abhisek Lahiri and Shri Subrata Bhattacharya.

The concert’s success would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the music family and the usual suspects. Special thanks, as always, go to Asmita and Milind, who never say no to hosting a concert, even if that means canceling their plans or trips. Rajendra Bapat and Anil Maybhate, who efficiently manage most of the logistics, thank you. And, of course, everyone who came donated and supported. Thank you
