Chandrika Krishnamurthy Tandon, vocals
NPR welcomes the Smithsonian to its headquarters, at 1111 North Capitol Street NE, Washington, DC. This event will take place in Studio 1. This Grammy-nominated singer draws on North Indian (Hindustani), South Indian (Carnatic), Latin American, and jazz traditions to explore the ancient mantra Om Namo Narayanaya, which corresponds in Hindu cosmology to the eight vital centers of the body. For this concert, celebrating yoga’s roots and its transformative potential, Tandon brings a small choir of vocalists together with a global ensemble of musicians on flute, saxophone, sitar, guitar, tabla, and keyboard. Her soaring voice and innovative fusion of Sanskrit chant with world music are accompanied by an instrumental and vocal ensemble and a multimedia presentation of images from Yoga: The Art of Transformation.
